What went well in class this week?

i really enjoyed the assignment were we had to solve a problem with a solution that could never befallowed through. it was nice for a change to have an idea and developed it with a group rather then take a philosophers idea and analize it. it also helped me to think more critically of current issues and aply them.

As usual, I thought the sharing of Philosophy papers went very well. The papers of themselves were well written, well-organized, and startlingly insightful and original. It was obvious that everyone had put a lot of time in their essays. I also thought the class was a very respectful audience during the readings, and that the post-reading commentary was really positive.

during the past week the thing that we did went very well. i really like the writing of the paper that you had us do. it was very fun and i found it more enjoyable then the first becasue i was better at it. i hope to do one more by the time the class ends.

I especially enjoyed the readings provided this week. I thought that the qualities of a prince held good information and was a bit humourous at times. When he spoke of finding a way to be bad in a goood way rather than being good all the time I found it to be very ironic and altogether correct. Because you cannot be good in everyones point of view it is better to find an overall acceptable way of being bad. I also enjoyed the group sharings of our modest proposals because it was very interesting to see and hear the collection of different ways to attack the assignment.

I liked reading only two papers a day and then doing discussions; it wasn't the usual routine and it also wasn't sitting and listening for whole classes at a time. I enjoy hearing everyone's papers, but, sitting still for such a long time, I let my mind wander a little bit. Mixing it up this week kept my attention more easily.

I really enjoyed how we had different sizes of small groups per what we were doing. That enhanced my classroom experience quite a bit, I daresay.

I really enjoyed the essays, they offered a lot of inspiring thoughts and I can't wait untill Socrate's Cafe to discuss them further.

I really felt that the modest proposal activity went very well. I really enjoyed how everyone was open minded and were willing to participate. I also felt that the small groups talking abotu the modest proposal went smoothly. The ideas everyone protrayed were awsome.

I really liked the extent of the reading we had this week. Each assignment needed longer reading and thought put into it. I really liked the modest proposal assignment. I think that this was very ammusing and fun and gave us a great chance to be creative which was nice and different.

I really liked the group sharing of A Modest proposal. I thought a lot of people in class had a lot of really good ideasa, and a lot of really quirky solutions that would both make sense, and offend a lot of minority citizens.

I think that everyone did a great job on their papers. It probably was the thing that went the best in my opinion. I love hearing eveyones thoughts when they are completly whole in a paper. It is hard for me not to hear a paper and be affected by it. There was a few that took opposite positions on the same point, and when i would hear one i would completely agree, and then i would hear the other and completely agree with them. Oh well i guess i am just indecisive.

I was really impressed by a lot of the virtue/vice papers that were read in class. The vocabulary, eloquence, and ideas of the class as a whole were amazing. Some of the papers took a unique point of view that I wouldn't have otherwise considered, but because the authors expressed themselves so well, I could definitely see the point they were making. Well done, everybody!

it's been a while but i think that the descussions went well, especially in small group's. i think that we are moast definitly comfterble to say just about anything withought somone putting us down or making a scene. we are like a very educated and philosophical family. no effence to roger but i think that he has been a little less vocal which is good because i know others wish to have their two sence herd.

Last week was exciting and refreshing because of the outstanding quality of everyone's paper. Being able to listen to these papers is an honor, for it is a difficult task to share them. It was interesting to see everyone's take on the assignment and the great variation on topics. It was also interesting to see how some people that chose the same topic argued different points. In addition to the fascinating essays by each person in the class, the Modest Proposal essay by Swift was hilarious and entertaining. It was startling to read his honest opinion twisted with irony and sarcasm. Writing our own was also a great idea, it was fun and envigorating to take such a shocking stance on a subject.

Reading our papers this week went very smoothly. More kudos to Kyle for setting our class straight. The was much respect, and questions and comments were plentiful. Despite the length of the essays, it seemed like everyone was paying attention and remaining interested.

the essays that were read this week were very good, and the modest proposal assignment was surprisingly in depth for a one night paper.

The reading of the pithy quotes went very well in class this week. I enjoyed hearing the many varying opinions of others through their writing. We have a class filled with mnay talented writers and I am always impressed to hear them. Also, not only did the we do well in the writing, as a whole, but we also were very good audience members. It is very risky to leave the praise open to the class because some people will receive more than others, but our class is very generous and makes sure to speak up and give valuable praise where deserved.

The readings this week were especailly enjoyable. Having but heard of the philosophies of Machiavelli, it was a realt treat to finally be able to read his work. Surprisingly, it was not as offensive as I was expecting because his ideas were supported by the apparant tendencies of humans as a whole. Particularly the bit about how humans are only one's true friends when they are obligation through threat, danger, or fear of death. Machiavelli knew how to read people and it was refreshing to finally hear exactly what it is every person is without the lace of avoidance of offence or exception. Also, Swift was particularly hilarious in his satirical essay poking fun at the English government and their rule over Ireland. Though his ideas for solving the problems of his country could work logically, what made them hilarious was this fact, even though they were completely unethical. Swift mastered the art of satire and it was a pleasure reading his work.

This week I enjoyed hearing the papers that we wrote. This is the first class that I have had to read what I wrote aloud. Although it was a challenge, it greatly helped me in that it reinforced my beliefs within myself. Also hearing what others had to say opened my eyes to view points I have never seen through.

What could have gone better?

i dont think anything could have gone better. Maybe a little more time for writing the paper but not even that becasue if people needed the time u would extend it for them.

Although hearing the papers was an interesting experience, they became boring rather quickly. I understand that this is hard to fix, however, I liked how we did it later in the week. Reading two or three a day made it easier to pay attention, and therefore I was able to remember the points they made.

Had we all been able to share our modest proposals it would have been slightly more beneficical. Although it is nearly impossible to change the fact that we never have enough time in one day for philosophy, it would have been nice to spend less time prefecting teh ideas and more time hearing and responding to each idea with a less frantic mind set.

I am genuinly upset over the current state of our stapler. The fine piece of equipment that was on the table at the front of the class is now gone, thus ruining the general mood of the class. Where could that sleek and wonderous tool have gotten to? Not a soul should rest until it is returned to its rightful position at the head of the class, I know I havn't.

I didn't do the homework assignment on the modest proposal and I wish I had. I feel like I could have contributed to my small group with an idea. I feel like my small group was straying further and further away from being P.C. every time we added more details and I felt just a little uncomfortable. Other than that incident, this week went very well for me.

I don't think anything could have gone better. It was a great week. Maybe fewer snow days...

I feel that a couple of our small groups could have gone better, because there is less focus than there used to be. Maybe it just because of the soon to come holidays, but there is a lack in intellectual talk amongst us in my opinion. i suppose that we cannot be awesomely deep everyday, but we will just have to start digging deeper within ourselves.

i feel that the class has lost its interest this week, at least for me i didn't enjoys this weeks readings as much as usual so maybe that is why i am unfocused. i need to work on concentrating on my homework also.

I only wish we could write and share more essays in class, comical or not.

I really feel that nothing could of been much better. I really enjoyed all the activities we did this weekend, and really don't want to change anytihng.

I really ought to take notes on mishappenings in class, they don't happen often enough to recall.

i think i can remember one day last week when the whole class was tired and for the first time the class seemed to drag. which wasn't a bad thing but i wish we had more energy that day!

I think the reading two of each paper could have gone better. No offence to you, but I think that we would have lost less time reading everything on monday then spreading them out throughout the week.

I was unsure about our assignments relating to Jonathan Swift's 'A Modest Proposal.' I didn't really know what exactly we were supposed to do, and so my own modest proposal was thrown together poorly, without a real understanding of what I was supposed to be doing. I could have asked for clarification if I had checked the syllabus before leaving class.

i would have liked more time to discuss a modest proposal.

I would have liked to have had the snow day because I had desperately wanted to discuss 'On Humour' with my classmates while it was fresh in my mind, however, this was impossible. I appreciate the snow day, though I fear that I will be feeling the opposite come June. Also, I am ashamed that Ifailed to complete one of the assignments in the beginning of the week, my first. Though I diligently made up the work and handed it in the next day along with my regularly due homework, the guilt was unbearable. THis fault on my part is easily avoided by the consistent, nightly check of the syllabus to make sure that any homework is noticed and completed. This is something which I can and will work on independently.

I would have preffered not to have missed any days this week, but unfortunately after the concertI was not capableof mooving without a lot of pain.

It would have been a better week if we had more time. It seems that someone always gets cut off from sharing something at the end of class because of the bell. Perhaps we should remove the bell from our room and leave when our discussion again. Then again, perhaps that would be never. I think that's the sign of a great class, but nonetheless I feel bad that someone is always rudely inturrupted.

Well, for starters, I could have remembered to do this survey on time, ha ha. I will next week, I promise. Also, I wish we'd had more time to share our Modest Proposals. They were really creative and amusing, and I would have liked to hear more!

Identity someone who inspired you this week, someone who achieved something above and beyond expectations.

As was expected, every person wrote their papers really well, so I won't go into specifics for everybody in the class; however, there were a couple people that impressed me most of all. I really liked how Jean-Paul wrote about Hope as a vice; that's an uncommon perspective and drawing parallels between relying on hope and having an addiction was perfect for illustrating that. Mike chose an awesome topic that wouldn't have come to my mind; his proof that Speed 2 is great art will always stick out in my memory and strike down any notions I have to be an art-snob.

Brian Webb merits my praise this week with the sheer magnificance of his modest proposal. Not only was it hilarious, but it was completely original and an interesting take on the assignment, yet vaguely similar to that of Swift. His use of the nutrients found in penguins was innovative and creative. Also, I admired his well-placed comments about the inhabitants of India and his brief explainations of his reasons for dehumanizing them to achieve the sympathy of the reader. This device was effective and magnificently funny simultaneously. Brian has a way of lackadaisically conveying his ideas that makes me wonder why I had never seen his particular view before. His clear and calm explainations of his complicated thoughts is especially exemplary.

I feel that Ben Mosher is deserving of my praise this week for his hard work, and creative approach to A Modest Proposal. I thought Ben's idea about reinstating slavery was super cool, and the way he read it and stated how practical it would be almost made me agree with him until I realized I was under 19 and would become a slave.I especially liked his usage of 'darker cousins'.

I feel that teresa deserves praise this week. I was in her small group about the modest proposal reading, and she didn't hesitate to take the leadership role in the group. She made sure the everyone shared and always gave good feedback to everyone.

I give kudo's to brian. He brought in his laptop to sharehis paper withus because he could not find a way to print it. This is worthy of kudo's because he was willing to risk something that valuable just to let his words be heard. Kudos.

i give my coodose to the old stapeler. i do this because he or she was very respectful when others were prasing the new stapeler. i thought that the old stapeler was wise in knowing that it was only a matter of time before the new one got too good! i believe that we can all learn from this stapeler in that patence is a vertue and all good things come with time. so props to the old stapeler for being so stoical!!! i would also like to thank the old, new stapeler for taking it's fifteen minotes of fame and not wanting eny more!!! i also apresheate Mike for standing up the quickest to help Mr. O in his time of nead! you are a true gentileman!

I really enjoyed Josh's paper, but I'd like to congratulate the entire class on their writings; stellar job all around.

I want to praise Teresa for her amazing paper on altruism. She took a unique point of view, asserting that selflessness is not always a good thing, and had good examples to prove it. She also made sure to define her topic, which even Montaigne failed to do occasionally. I admire her ability to express her ideas and develop her point of view in her writing.

I was riveted by Alegra's amazing writing on bordum. From start to finish I was on the edge of my seat, hanging on her every word. Well, maybe not from the very start, but for all the important bits. It was a very interesting idea and a well written paper. There's no way you can be bored with an essay as long as Alegra's mind is behind it.

josh gets my kudos this week, for his exxellent essay on betrayal. the language that he used was simply astounding, and his story brought vivid images to my closed eyes. josh's talent for writing was great at the beginning of this class, but his skill has done nothing but grow. nice job josh.

one person who really inspired me to do good the past week was alexas. the reason that she inspired me was because she did such an amazing job on her paper and i wanted to do jsut as well. i was very impressed with how the flow of her paper went and i wish that mine had flown as easy. it takes a lot of work and hard work at that, to get a paper to sound seemless. She was able to do this and in my opinion would have been a good philosohper herrself. Congrats alexas.

Roger recieves my praise this week for coming up with the ultimate solution to overpopulation. The plan he outlined not only seemed like a successful, entertaining one, but also a practical, efficent solution to an immense problem. Overpopulation is a serious issue, to deny that would be suicide, and a real solution is desperately needed to save humanity. The answer is right in front of us, to design a system similar to what Roger suggested. All wars could be fought in a controlled enviroment, not only eliminating civilian casuality, but speeding up the process as well. Perhaps Roger knows the future of war, or perhaps he is merely supreme. Either way, kudos to Roger!

Someone that impressed me this week was Paige. Her essay was well thought out, and I was glad that she presented it herself. She had been asking me all week to read it for her, but when it was her turn she told me she could do it, and she did. I think that it is best to hear someone's work from their own mouth, and that is why I was also impressed by Kyle. Both of them read their essays even though they felt like they were not going to do well, but they surpassed their own expectations and proved to themselves that they could. Awesome job. Oh and I wanted to tell Tori that her Modest proposal was very funny, but i hope it never happens.

this week i feel that tory deserves praise, day after day she comes in with a smile on her face and eagerly shares her enthusiasm with everyone. there is not a single person in the class that she wont talk to, she is open to everyone. whenever someone is talking in large group you can tell that she is always listening because usually she reacts to what they say. even if it is as simple as nodding her head in understandment it is a good feeling to know that you are being heard. thank you tory!

This week I would like to extend my kudos to Kyle. He wrote a fantastic paper, that was easy to follow and made some very interesting points. I would like to congratulate him for reading his paper aloud. I myself find it hard to read out loud, and his reading gave me inspiration for myself.

This week I would like to praise Vincent. He is always a great addition to every small discussion group. However, I think Vincent went out on a limb with the topic he chose to write about for his philosophy paper. 'Religious Fanaticism' could have easily offended numerous people, but I think Vincent handled it well, and ultimately shared a logical, non-offensive argument in his paper. Vincent is always a positive and enthusiastic presence in philosophy class. I look forward to hearing more from 'Vinny Cent' in the future.

This week I'm sure someone praised Mr. Supreme aka Roger, so I'm not going to pick him. His ego is far too big for his own good and I don't wish to encourage him in any way. So this week I will praise both Ben Mosier and Tori Ames. Each week both of them have some of the best points in the class and I listen attentivly to whatever they have to say. I always enjoy being in one of their groups because I can hear their thoughts and ideas about every part of whatever discussion.

This week Roger deserves my praise.I thought that his (and his groups) idea for the modest proposal was unique, humourous and a logical solution to our overpopulation project. So you may be wondering why only Rog? Roger did a superb job presenting the modest proposal to the group his logic was planned out beautifully and flowed as if he had been working on it for days. All of those things were great but the sly grin on the side of his face the entire presentation really sold me. I would also just like to point out that I am one hundred percent positive that Roger will make an amazing father.

This week, my praise goes to Allegra. Her paper on boredom was very interesting to hear. She made it to be sort of an ironic paper as she captured the attention of her audience and kept it, unlike if the audience were suffering from the disease about which she wrote. She made sure to illustrate the symptoms of boredom, such as taking a break to 'go get a drink of water' or reading an unnecessarily long exerpt from a government document, which made her paper very amusing. I respect Allegra because she always goes above just simply doing the assignment and makes it unique. Kudos!
